James and the Giant 3 Peaks LawNet Challenge

September 2014

For one of the firm’s Partners, James Couzens, the weekend of the 20th September 2014 was busy, exhausting but exhilarating all at the same time!  James set out to conquer the LawNet 3 Peaks Challenge which involved climbing Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis all in a 24 hour period.

The challenge was not only physical but also to raise money for LawNet’s chosen charities in its 25th year of operation. LawNet’s chosen charities were Marie Cure Cancer Care, the NSPCC and Midlands Air Ambulance. James added to these charities when seeking donations from his contacts by adding the Motor Neurone Disease Association, since his father died from MND 25 years ago. The challenge involved 22 miles of walking, with heights totalling 9700 feet, and a helicopter rescue at Scafell Pike (but thankfully not for James or his fellow team members).

“We were very lucky with the weather, it didn’t rain once, which gave great views on Scafell Pike and if it had rained it would have made it very slippery. It was still hard work, especially climbing Ben Nevis starting in the dark at 2am in the morning with the only light from our head torches” says James.  “You cannot see as clearly and picking your way makes it more hard work.”

Driving between points was also time consuming, with the journey between Snowdon and Scafell Pike taking 4 ½ hours and Scafell Pike to Ben Nevis notching up a further 6 hours, all in a mini bus, but James was able to use these trips to catch-up with some much needed sleep.

Ben Nevis was the team’s final climb and when they arrived back at base at 8 am on the Sunday morning they were ready for a well-earned full Scottish Breakfast of Haggis and Scottish Sausages.

The final word is from James “I am pleased to say that I completed the 3 Peaks Challenge in 23 hours 22 minutes, and I have surpassed my fundraising target of £1,000.  Thank you to everyone who has made a donation”.
