Family Department News

From 1 April 2013 there are going to be major changes relating to the provision of legal aid.  At present we can offer clients the benefit of legal aid, if they are financially eligible, in respect of divorce, financial and children matters.  In many of these cases legal aid will no longer be available for new clients from 1 April 2013 onwards.  In some cases a far more limited form of legal aid may still be available. These include help with mediation, domestic violence and care proceedings.

We recognise that this will make it very difficult for many clients to afford legal advice and representation. We plan to introduce a range of fixed fee work which we hope will be able to assist in many cases where legal aid is no longer available.  We will also be offering monthly advice sessions for a small fee for clients on a very low income.

We are also reviewing the way in which we set our charges and will be publishing full details on our website over the next few weeks.

This will enable our clients to have a clear idea of their likely legal charges and will help them to budget accordingly.

Please watch our website for further developments and look out for our Department leaflet detailing our charges.
