Key issues Grandparents face

September 2012

At a recent talk with The Grandparents Association, Jane Dwyer discussed the issues grandparents face. The main questions raised at the talk were:

  • Can my child challenge my will if I choose not to leave him anything in the will?
  • How can I ensure that any money that I leave to my grandchild will be used for his benefit? I am worried that his mother will take it and spend it.
  • I do not want to appoint my child as an executor of my will. Can I appoint professional executors/trustees such as Parrott & Coales? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?
  • Lasting Powers of Attorney for Property and Financial Affairs - I understand that a Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Financial Affairs will allow me to appoint someone to deal with my financial affairs if I lose mental capacity. Can you explain please.

If any of these issues are affecting you or someone you know please contact Jane Dwyer who would be happy to talk through the options.
