From 1 October 2011, water and sewerage companies in England and Wales became responsible for the majority of private sewers, which until then were the responsibility of property owners.
Many property owners will benefit from these changes, as most sewers running through another person's land or used jointly with an adjoining property have now become the responsibility of the local water authority to repair.
However certain private pipes are not included and there will be some cases where owners remain responsible for the section of pipe between the property and the newly adopted private sewer or lateral drain.
Thames Water have provided a useful leaflet including diagrams showing how the change will affect you please click here to view this.
